The DSHS Alzheimer’s Disease Program has developed helpful courses and resources related to screening, diagnosis, care coordination and referrals for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
These courses were developed
for primary care providers (PCPs), who are often the first health care professionals
to address cognitive decline with patients and their families and caregivers
and who play a critical role in management of the disease.

The goal of this course is to equip primary care providers and other health care professionals to identify symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, distinguish between various types of dementia, recognize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, and employ validated tools to facilitate diagnosis, care management or referral.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:
- Identify signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other disorders that cause dementia, including distinguishing signs of dementia from normal signs of aging.
- Describe the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
- Use validated diagnostic tools and treatment guidelines for making a diagnosis and providing disease management.
Successful completion of this continuing education activity includes:
- Successful completion of a post-test, scoring 75% or higher.
- Completion and submission of the Participant Evaluation.

- Recognize the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia in Texas and the importance of screening and early diagnosis.
- Integrate validated cognitive assessment tool(s) during annual checkups for eligible patients and when warranted based on clinical judgement or concerns expressed by patients or loved ones.
- Apply recommended guidelines to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease as part of primary care practice.
